Peter Turnley: The Difference Between a Snapshot and a Photograph

I have always said that the difference between a snap shot and a photograph, is that with a snapshot the subject of the photograph looks at the camera, and with a photograph, the person being photographed allows you to look into their world. ⁣

There is something so powerful about being close, intimately close to someone you don’t know, and in the time of an exchange, when the person gives one access to their life through their eyes-this access being a true gift of life and humanity, and subsequently, their world is offered for that moment, for contemplation for all time. This access is only the beginning, what we are offered to see, can be thought about and contemplated forever, and the beauty is that there will never be a certain answer. ⁣
