Portfolio Reviews Are Valuable

Scott Kelby recently reviewed my photo portfolio. I found it very helpful. I had mixed together street and travel photos. Within seconds, Scott asked if I am a travel or a street photographer. I said I mainly do travel but also enjoy street photography. I added that I think I am a decent travel photographer but not at the same level with my street photography. Scott suggested I separate the two, which I agree is a good idea. I asked about including some people in my travel portfolio. Scott said that was fine but it should be an odd number of people (basically one or three), mainly to provide scale. He suggested street photos in my portfolio that I could keep in my travel portfolio.

I added that I sometimes like B&W photos and but don’t like mixing color photos with B&W photos. Scott said that was fine and just create a separate B&W portfolio.

As a result, I now have three portfolios on my site:

  1. Travel
  2. Personal (mainly but not exclusively street)
  3. B&W

I wondered if the 15 minutes allotted for the portfolio review would be enough but it was enough time.

Scott also suggested photos to delete from my portfolio.

Scott answered all my questions and was always polite, honest and helpful.

I have revised my portfolio based on Scott’s helpful critique and the results are here.

I welcome comments.
