Tourists Attacked Near Eiffel Tower – One Dead, Two Injured

One person died and two others were injured after a man attacked tourists in central Paris near the Eiffel Tower, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Saturday.

Police quickly arrested the 26-year-old man, a French national, using a Taser stun gun, Darmanin told reporters.

The suspect had been sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 for planning another attack and was on the French security services’ watch list, and was also known for having psychiatric disorders, the interior minister added.

L’auteur des coups mortels, né en France en 1997 et de nationalité franco-iranienne, a été placé en garde à vue. Il a crié « Allah akbar » avant d’être interpellé, et avait déjà été condamné pour association de malfaiteurs terroriste en 2018.

December 6, 2023 UPDATE: Le Monde reports that the terrorist, Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab, while in police custody, said he considered carrying out his attack in the Vél’ d’Hiv children’s memorial garden, near the Eiffel Tower, which is a Jewish site. Vél d’Hiv was the largest French deportation of Jews during the Holocaust. It took place in Paris on July 16–17, 1942.

Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab a été mis en examen mercredi soir. Durant sa garde à vue, il a déclaré avoir envisagé de commettre son attaque dans le jardin mémorial des enfants du Vél’ d’Hiv, près de la tour Eiffel.
